Lot Details

Framed under UV-protective Plexiglass, dimensions 37.5 x 42.25 inches (95.3 x 107.3 cm).

In “The Raft of George W. Bush,” Joel-Peter Witkin draws parallels to the famous 19th- century painting The Raft of the Medusa (1818-19) by Théodore Géricault. Witkin’s work is both a humorous political satire and a harshly critical examination of Bush’s presidency. Witkin depicts the former president seated in the lower left wearing a McDonalds gold paper crown, a hand around the breast of a naked Condolezza Rice. Barbara Bush is tied to the mast of the raft, and the former Secretary of Defense, Secretary of State, the Vice President, and his wife are also depicted in the image.
