Lot Details

Jock Sturges (American, born 1947) is a photographer best known for his images of pre-pubescent and adolescent nudes, primarily girls, but also occasionally boys, and almost always in a natural setting, featuring a single figure or a group, sometimes a mother and daughter. He works mainly at naturist colonies and nude beaches in Northern California and France, and much of his early work revolved around Misty Dawn, whom he shot nude from when she was a young child until in her twenties. His work has been the subject of controversy, and was rocketed to public attention when he was subjected to an aggressive FBI child pornography investigation in April 1990. The case, which stirred outrage in the naturist community, the art world, and among civil libertarians, was eventually thrown out by a grand jury.

Sturges was born in New York City, and worked in San Francisco for many years. He was a student of the photographer and printer Richard Benson. He graduated with a BFA in Perceptual Psychology and photography from Marlboro College, Vermont, in 1974, and received an MFA in photography from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1985. He now resides in Seattle, Washington.
