Presented in gold, wooden frame, 'Prijato Umeleckou Komisi' demonstrates Kolar's unique collage style, providing a new adaptation on an ancient theme.

Best known for his poetry and collages, renowned Czech writer and artist Jiri Kolar (1914-2002) was a leading figure of the 1940’s Surrealist group. As both a visual artist and a writer, Kolar’s innovative style that went against the norm and aimed at influencing his audience’s perspectives was constantly at odds with the communist government, which led to his imprisonment in 1950 and a ban on his writings. Focusing his artist expression more towards experimental visual art, Kolar helped develop new techniques in collage, incorporating text, image, and color in different ways. Since his first solo show in 1937, Kolar has held solo exhibitions throughout the world, including a 1978 show at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY and participation in the 1990 Venice Biennale. Most recently, his work was the subject of solo exhibitions at Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo, Italy (2010); Pavel Zoubok Gallery, New York, NY (2009); Hilger Modern, Vienna, Austria (2009); and Galerie Lelong, Paris, France (2008). Kolar died in Prague in 2002.
