Lot Details

"The Winter Break" (2013) is one of the most sublime and exciting figurative oil paintings that stands as a major, new example of the work of U.S. based, Korean Contemporary artist Jinchul Kim. His series of realist oil portraits of young American women have garnered him international acclaim, as they each reveal an undercurrent of emotional and psychological tension underneath their superficial beauty, engaging the viewer in a game of reveal-conceal, where an unknown narrative is never fully disclosed, as if we viewing a film still from an Alfred Hitchcock or David Lynch movie. "The Winter Break" measures 24 x 46, is framed to slightly larger dimensions and is in perfect condition.

Jinchul Kim was born and raised in South Korea, where he earned a BFA and MFA from King Se-Jong University in Seoul Korea concentrating on painting. The artist moved to the US in 1989 and in 1993, he received another MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. His work is held in select public and private collections in Asia, Europe and the U.S. The artist presently lives and works in Washington D.C.
