Lot Details

This work, "Two Hearts at Sunset", is an iconic image by Jim Dine executed in 2005 which exemplifies the artist's love of brightly contrasting colors and optical manipulation. With a dynamic display of blues, yellows, reds, and blacks, Dine creates the visual illusion of a two hearts hovering above the two dimensional picture plane. This is an original lithograph being printed on Rives BFK paper measuring 19 x 25 1/2 inches (48.8 x 64.8 cm).

A modern master of printmaking, Jim Dine has long combined Pop-informed imagery with a highly personal point of view. Among other popular subjects such as his iconic hearts and robes, flowers have also been a focus throughout Dine's career. Dine was born June 16, 1935, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He studied at night at the Cincinnati Art Academy during his senior year of high school and then attended the University of Cincinnati, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Ohio University, Athens, from which he received his B.F.A. in 1957. Dine moved to New York in 1959 and soon became a pioneer creator of “Happenings”, together with Allan Kaprow, and Robert Whitman. He exhibited at the Judson Gallery, New York, in 1958 and 1959, and his first solo show took place at the Reuben Gallery, New York, in 1960.
