Lot Details

Sheet size is 25.5 x 19 inches (64.8 x 48.8 cm).

This original lithograph in 7 colors, printed on Rives BFK paper, was executed in 2005 by Jim Dine. "The Blue Heart” exemplifies the artist's love of brightly contrasting colors and optical manipulation. With a dynamic display of blues, yellows, greens, and pinks, Dine creates the visual illusion of a heart hovering above the two-dimensional picture plane.

Contemporary American printmaker Jim Dine (b. 1935) has long combined Pop-informed imagery with a highly personal point of view. Hearts, robes, and flowers are recurring motifs in Dine's body of work. Dine studied at night at the Cincinnati Art Academy during his senior year of high school, and then went on to attend the University of Cincinnati; the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and Ohio University, Athens, OH, from which he received his BFA in 1957. Dine moved to New York in 1959 and soon became, together with artist such as Claes Oldenburg and Robert Whitman, a pioneer creator of “Happenings.” Dine exhibited at the Judson Gallery, New York, NY in 1958 and 1959, and his first solo show took place at the Reuben Gallery, New York, NY in 1960. Since 1960, he has had over 300 solo exhibitions, including recent shows at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (2004) and the Morgan Library and Museum, New York, NY (2011).
