Lot Details

Jesús Rafael Soto (Venezuelan, 1923–2005) is a sculptor and installation artist associated with the Kinetic Art movement and best known for large-scale, geometric works that create optical movement. "Kinetic Objects (Hannover)" (1968) is a highly desired dynamic work by the artist, measuring 6.9 x 20 x 4.7 inches (17.5 x 50.8 x 11.9 cm).

Born in Ciudad Bolivar, he studied at the School of Fine Arts in Caracas before moving to Paris, where he became associated with a group of abstract artists called Salon des Realités Nouvelles. Inspired by the work of Piet Mondrian (Dutch, 1872–1944) and Kazimir Malevich (Russian, 1878–1935), Soto created a series of Repetition Paintings, which were composed of simple, geometric shapes. In 1955, he created his first dynamic works by superimposing drawings made on Plexiglass, and during the 1960s he continued to incorporate three dimensional elements in several series, including Writings, Ts, and Ambivalences. In 1968, he began working on his series of Penetrables, life-size works made from flexible nylon threads that vibrate as the viewer approaches them.

Soto’s work has been exhibited in many public locations, including the hall of the UNESCO building in Paris (1969) and the Forum of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (1987). His work is held by several museum collections, including the Tate Modern in London, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the Museo de Arte Moderno Jesus Soto in Bolívar, Venezuela.
