Lot Details

Jeremy Willis has a flair for revisiting pop and expressionism in his canvases. This rather colorfully charged composition emphasizes the vital essences of his subject. His paintings blend something of de Kooning's manic early 1950s women with the lush and meaty portraits of Francis Bacon, his subject's physicality emphasize a raw crudeness. At first glance, it seems the viewer is confronting a muddle, however, with a closer look one sees his fluent brush strokes smoothly blend into a rainbow of richness. The strong color palette and provocative subject matter create a wonderful balance of both shock and awe for the viewer, making it almost impossible to look away.

Jeremy Willis received his BFA in 1999 from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and MFA from Hunter College in 2008. He has taught fine art at such prestigious institutions like the Parsons Academy and Hunter College. Willis' works are recognized for the intriguing representation of the visually bright and bold decay of the human condition, with exhibitions at the Allegra LaViola Gallery, the Dash Gallery, Priska Juschka Fine Art, among many others in New York, as well as Road Island, California, and abroad.
