Lot Details

“Thomas” is from Jen DeNike's "Vampire Series," depicting subjects who have been victimized by vampires. In this series, DeNike equates the role of the artist with the role of the vampire. The artist exploits the privacy of the subject just as the vampire physically exploits the body of a human. However, the result in both cases is the same: the removal of the soul from the victim. Essentially, DeNike is engaging in the dialogue that asks the question: where do art and life meet? A photograph is just a remnant of what takes place in the moment that a picture is taken. Thus, DeNike argues that, like a vampire, the artist can only preserve a piece of a moment but not the true essence of it.

Jen DeNike is an American photographer based in New York City. She earned her MFA in photography at Bard College. Her work has been featured in galleries and museums around the world and some of her works can be found in the permanent collections of the MoMA, the Julia Stoschek Collection, and the IL Giardino dei Lauri Collection.
