Lot Details

This colorful, silvery print presents one of Koons’ most significant subjects, an inflatable toy monkey juxtaposed on top of historical images of modes of transport - symbols of the American Industrial revolution - a locomotive train contrasted with an image of the horse drawn carriage. The monkey is a famously recurring subject in the artist’s oeuvre, from his well-known statue of Michael Jackson with his pet chimp to his paintings Monkeys (ladder) 2003, the ceiling-hung chain of inflated monkeys sculpture from the Popeye series and the Monkey Train paintings (2007).

Jeff Koons will have the first retrospective of a contemporary artist that will fill an entire museum space. It will cover 35 years of the artist's career and open in January 2014 at the Whitney Museum, NYC. This will be the last exhibition presented in the museum's Breuer building prior to their move downtown to Chelsea in 2015.
