Lot Details

This 1999 painting by New York-based artist James Siena is one of a series of works by the artist which reference the Proton Saga, a line of compact and subcompact cars produced from 1985 onward. This industrial reference is played out across work's aluminum surface, with the bright, jagged enamel patterns assuming a highly systematic character. Meanwhile, the intricacy and hand-painted quality of the work lend an inescapable expressiveness to Siena's abstraction.

Artwork measures 19.25 x 15.13 inches (48.9 x 38.5 cm).

James Siena (b. 1957) is a contemporary American artist best known for his vibrant and intricate abstractions. Siena’s work as a draftsman, printmaker, and painter demonstrates a preoccupation with the patterns yielded by rule-based or systematic methods. At the same time, his artworks can be expressive, vivid, optically challenging, or even sensual. Siena received a BFA from Cornell University in 1979. He has had solo exhibitions at Daniel Weinberg Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2004, 2006-2007, 2010); PaceWildenstein, New York, NY (2005-2006, 2008); Pace Prints (2007); and Pace Gallery, New York, NY (2011), among many others. Recent group shows include “The Compulsive Line: Etching 1900 to Now” at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (2006); “New at the Morgan: Acquisitions Since 2004” at the Morgan Library and Museum, New York, NY (2009); and “Print/Out: 20 Years in Print” at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (2012). He lives and works in New York.
