Lot Details

Classified as a lithograph composed of "pressed paper pulp, acrylic, dye, and collage on paper," this work strays from the constraints of most lithographs, including those by Rosenquist.

JAMES ROSENQUIST worked as a billboard painter before becoming a fine artist. In 1964, he joined the roster of POP artists at the Leo Castelli Gallery and he remains one of the most distinguished and influential artists of his generation.

The artist creates visual stories by taking fragmented, oddly disproportionate images, and combining, overlapping, and putting them on canvases.

Rosenquist was featured in a Retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 2003, and is in the permanent collections of such museums as the Museum of Modern Art New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Chicago Art Institute, the Guggenheim Museum in NY, Bilbao, and Berlin, and many others.

What distinguishes this work is that each piece contains a collage that is different from the others, making no two pieces exactly alike. In general, pieces in an edition of lithographs are all precisely the same. A work such as this, one with an element that varies from piece, to piece is both rare and extraordinary.

Pieces from this edition can be found in both museum and university collections. These works have also crossed the auction block at both Christie’s and Sotheby’s New York.
