James Jacques Joseph Tissot (1836-1902) was a French painter and graphic artist, born in Nantes as Joseph-Jacques Tissot. By 1871 Tissot had relocated to London and began focusing on depictions of every-day life. He experienced tremendous success but after the death of his mistress, in 1882, he returned to France where he dedicated himself to religious tableaux until the time of his death.
