Lot Details

This Jacques Lipchit sculpture, “Memory of Rabat” stands 14.5 inches tall and 16 inches wide. The sculpture is from an edition of 7 plus 1 and is signed via thumbprint on the base. “Memory of Rabat” is completed in Lipchitz's typical nonrepresentational style of sculpting; the work bends and warps in free form on a tilted axis, unrestrained from the confines of its central base.

Jacques Lipchitz (French, 1891-1973) was a French cubist sculptor who lived most of his life in New York. During his lifetime he was the recipient of major retrospectives, awards and commissions. In 1937 his sculpture “Prometheus” was awarded a gold medal at the Paris World Exposition. His first major retrospective was held in 1930 at the "Galerie de la Renaissance" in Paris, followed by another major retrospective in New York in 1954. In 1969 “Peace on Earth,” one of his many important public commissions was revealed in Los Angeles. Lipchitz died in Italy, May 1973.
