This work is an element (Teilbau) of the larger Cafe Deutschland series, which was created between 1977 and 1984. This series of paintings, prints and drawings are considered among his most important works.
Jörg Immendorff is regarded as one of Germany's most respected artists and became recognized internationally around the early 1980's.
Immendorf studied with Joseph Beuys at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. In 1976 he met A.R. Penk in East Berlin and the two artists formed the "Kollektiv Immendorff-Penck". From early on, Immendorf devoted himself to political and socio-critical subjects. The atmosphere in his paintings was often of a darker nature, with much use of irony and heavy symbolism to convey his ideas. His imagery bordered on the surreal and often focused on the conflict between East and West Germany ever present in the tumultuous years prior to reunification.
