Lot Details

"Kuroki Meisa wears Gucci, #461, #462, #463" (2006) together comprise the formal important set of three large-scale color photographs by Japanese Contemporary photographer, Izima Karou. This triptych belongs to Karou's famous "Landscape with a Corpse" Series. begun in 1993 in which he photographs female celebrities in elaborately staged death scenes. Each c-print photograph is diasec mounted, each is edition 3 of 5 and each is in excellent condition. Dimensions for the three photographs are as follows:
Kuroki Meisa wears Gucci #461, #462: 70.9 x 94.5 inches (180.1 x 240 cm)
Kuroki Meisa wears Gucci #463: 70.9 x 59 inches (180.1 x 149.9 cm)

Seminal to this body of work are the multiple viewpoints and distances for each death-scene, progressing from long, panoramic shots to forensic close-ups, creating a cinematic, quasi-narrative effect. Here, actress and model Kuroki Meisa, immaculately groomed and clad in a white Gucci suit, feigns her death in a vast, cold, dark space under a superhighway. This scene is documented by Karou in a series of three photographs, each with vastly different telescoping perspectives- from the bird's eye remote view to the super close-up. Kaoru meditates on mortality and the transitory nature of feminine beauty. He also conflates its disposability in fashion and in erotic fantasy exploring the often blurred line between the horror and the sublime associated with death in both Japanese and Western cultures.
