Lot Details

"Hasegawa Kyoko wears Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche (411)" (2003) is an important large-scale color photograph by internationally acclaimed Japanese photographer Izima Kaoru (b. 1954 ). In 1993, Kaoru began his ongoing and now famous "Landscape With a Corpse" series, to which this work belongs, where famous Japanese and Western models describe the fantasies of their own deaths to the artist, who then elaborately stages them for the camera with cinematic perspectives. The models are each individualized, perfectly coiffed, hair and makeup flawlessly in place, outfitted in couture by today's top designers, all underscored in the titles of the specific works. The glamor of the models' attire is matched only by the empty and unusual locations selected. Reminiscent of Edgar Allan Poe’s assertion: “The death of a beautiful woman, is unquestionably the most poetical topic in the world,” Kaoru admittedly meditates on mortality and the transitory nature of feminine beauty, but also, perversely, conflates its disposability both in fashion and in erotic fantasy. This photograph is from an edition of 5, in mint condition, mounted on aluminum and face mounted to plexiglass. This is the only edition of this photograph to come to international auction at an impressive 71 x 97.50 inches (180 x 247.7 cm), the largest dimensions that Kaoru printed this image.
