Lot Details

"Fukasawa Elisa Wears John Galliano (#324)" (2001) is a stunning color c-print photograph by Contemporary Japanese photographer Izima Kaoru. This photograph measures 48.8 x 38.6 inches (124 x 98 cm), is from an edition of 5 + 1AP and is in excellent condition.

In 1993, Kaoru began his ongoing and now famous "Landscape With a Corpse" series, to which this work belongs, where famous Japanese and Western models describe the fantasies of their own deaths to the artist. Kaoru then elaborately stages these figures for the camera with cinematic perspectives. Here, beautiful Japanese actress Elisa Fukasawa is immaculately coiffed and clad in an couture Galliano. She feigns her perfect death with her eyes vacant yet luminous, in this closely cropped view. The manner and context of her death intentionally remain a a mystery, and embraces the often blurred line between the horror and the beauty associated with death in both Western and Japanese cultures. Reminiscent of Edgar Allan Poe’s assertion: “The death of a beautiful woman, is unquestionably the most poetical topic in the world,” Kaoru admittedly meditates on mortality and the transitory nature of feminine beauty, but also conflates its disposability both in fashion and in erotic fantasy.
