Lot Details

This rare and well executed marker on a NYC transit map by Iz the Wiz was completed late in the artist's career, two years before his death in 2009. Measuring approximately 32 x 23 inches, this work is in great condition and exemplifies the iconic writing style and range of colors so often seen in the artist's tags.

As one of the pioneers of the graffiti art movement in New York City in the late 1970s, Michael "Iz the Wiz" Martin (1958 - 2009) became the longest reigning All-City King of New York City’s subways in history. IZ played a major role in the development of writing and provided inspiration for every generation of writer that exists today. Hailing from Queens IZ took over the city subway system, line by line. Known best for his quick tag 'IZ', which enabled him to hastily put his mark all around the city, this notorious artist concerned himself with finding a balance between quantity and quality of graffiti writing. The dedication and love for writing is apparent in all of his works, from the burners on the trains, the sketches on paper, and the explosive canvases that capture the essence of his graffiti writing.
