Lot Details

Russian émigré artist Ilya Bolotowsky (1907– 1981) was a founding member of the American Abstract Artist, a group that invested itself in the public understanding of abstract art in the 1930s. His work was greatly influenced by Piet Mondrian, and his use of color tonalities within geometric, spatial and linear planes was founded on earlier Constructivist and Bauhaus abstractions. Bolotowsky became associated with a group called "The Ten" or "the Ten Whitney Dissenters," which included Adolph Gottlieb, Mark Rothko and Louis Shanker among its members. The group rejected the confined structure of the National Academy of Design in New York and held independent exhibitions outside of the institution.
