Lot Details

'The Golfer' (2007) is a rare and exciting painted and bronze figurative sculpture in the round by internationally acclaimed Chinese Post-Modern mixed-media artist Huang Gang (China, b. 1961) that combines traditional Chinese themes and methods with a Western popular culture. Here, Huang portrays a beautiful Chinese woman playing golf while wearing high heels, depicted frozen in mid-swing, with an assault rifle slung casually over her shoulder instead of a golf bag. She stands atop a round, PRC inspired red star embellished platform that is also painted red, the most iconic color related to Communist China. In this way, Huang addresses the new generation of women of China, both beautiful and feminine, yet bold and liberated. This work measures 27.6 x 20 inches (70 cm x 50.80 cm), is from an edition of 18 and is in perfect condition.

Huang Gang was born in 1961 in Beijing, China and received his undergraduate degree in 1984 and his masters degree in 1991 from China Central Academy of Art and Design. In 1995 the artist won a silver award of the first Beijing International Environment Artist and has exhibited internationally with solo shows in Germany, France, Switzerland, US and Hong Kong with at the J. Gallery, Hong Kong; the Royal Monceau in Paris; the Atlantic Gallery in Munich, Berlin, Hamburg and Frankfurt; Leda Fletcher Gallery in Geneva. Huang has also been included in special exhibitions at the Walsh Gallery in Chicago, the China National Art Museum in Beijing, the New York Asian Arts Fair, the Shanghai Art Fair, among many others.
