Lot Details

"Go Ahead!" (2008) is one of the most accomplished and dynamic of the figurative red painted bronze sculptures by Chinese Post-Modern artist Huang Gang (China, b. 1961) that conflates Chinese traditions and iconography with Western popular culture. This sculpture measures 52.35 x 23.6 x 39.4 inches (133 x 60 x 100 cm), is from an edition of 18, and in perfect condition. This work is a clever version of the "Three Graces", with Huang placing a trio of women upon a base in a dynamic narrative. At center, an heroic female nude stands with one foot gingerly places atop a miniature statue of Buddha, as she waves a starred flag above the heads of the two women who flank her, each wearing military caps and tops with high heels, all looking ahead towards the future. The entire work is painted a high gloss red: the color of China, of blood, of passion.

Huang Gang was born in 1961 in Beijing, China and received his undergraduate degree in 1984 and his masters degree in 1991 from China Central Academy of Art and Design. In 1995 the artist won a silver award of the first Beijing International Environment Artist and has exhibited internationally with solo shows in Germany, France, Switzerland, US and Hong Kong with at the J. Gallery, Hong Kong; the Royal Monceau in Paris; the Atlantic Gallery in Munich, Berlin, Hamburg and Frankfurt; Leda Fletcher Gallery in Geneva. Huang has also been included in special exhibitions at the Walsh Gallery in Chicago, the China National Art Museum in Beijing, the New York Asian Arts Fair, the Shanghai Art Fair, among many others.
