Lot Details

"UnitedCat: Japan(White)" (2006) is a rare and exciting sculpture in the round by Japanese Neo-Pop Contemporary urban artist, Hiro Ando (Japan, b. 1973). This is edition 3/26, and is the only edition of this long sold-out sculpture to come to international auction. The sculpture stands 19.69 inches high (50 cm), is in perfect condition, and comes directly from the Studio of the Artist. This work belongs to Ando's famous series of animal sculptures inspired by Japanese popular culture and the "Hello Kitty" craze. Ando's sculptures such as "UnitedCat: (Japan)" are all new takes on the image of the cat, which in Japan is a good-luck charm in the form of the Maneki-Neko, here morphed into a futuristic gang member, emblazoned with the Japanese Flag in bright white and vivid red as his gang 'colors', with his toughness underscored by his stoic stand and the one fang he bears at of the corner of his mouth.

Hiro Ando's sculptures take us to the world of Mangas which Ando and his generation grew up with, as well as the word of Contemporary Western artists such as Jeff Koons, whose sculptures have had a great influence on the artist. The art of Hiro Ando is the meeting between the Meiji era and the Manga generation, Shogun in the land of Pokemon, traditional Japan and the new, new Japan of the 21st century. Ando was born in 1973 on the Island of Shikoku, Japan. In 1995, Ando began a career as an illustrator after graduating from the University of Tama Art, Tokyo. He is known as a pioneer of the Neo-Pop Movement in Japan and Europe, often mixing painting, video, sculpture and performance art in singular manners. His works are offered by select galleries throughout Europe and Asia, including Galerie Jacob Paulett, France. The artist lives and works in Japan.
