Lot Details

"SamuraiCat (Chrome Metallic Blue)" (2006) is a rare and dynamic bright blue chrome covered resin sculpture by famous Japanese Neo-pop artist, Hiro Ando (Japan, b. 1973). The art of Hiro Ando can be considered the meeting between the Meiji era and the Manga generation: Shogun in the land of Pokemon. This sculpture belongs to Ando's famous series inspired by Japanese popular culture and the "Hello Kitty" craze, with works such as this that clearly based on the iamge of the cat, which in Japan is a good-luck charm in the form of the Maneki-Neko. This work measures 19.70 x 14.17 x 10.63 inches (50 x 36 x 27 cm), is from an edition of 26, and is in perfect condition. Ando's cats conflate traditional Japanese figures like the Samurai or the Sumo Wrestler with very modern, shiny and seductive materials and bright colors, such as chrome, crystals and resin, creating a dialogue between the traditional past and present cultures, between East and West, with influences ranging from Takashi Murakami to Jeff Koons.

Hiro Ando was born in 1973 on the Island of Shikoku, Japan. In 1995, Ando began a career as an illustrator after graduating from the University of Tama Art in Tokyo, and in the same yearfounded an artists' studio in Tokyo with another artist , Saori Nakamishi to manage the creation and promotion of other young neo-pop artists who include their own popular culture in their creations. Ando has exhibited internationally in major galleries and art fairs such as the Willem Kerseboom Gallery in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Galerie Slick Paris, le 104 Art Fair, France, Kaserne Basel Art Fair, Scope New York Art Fair, among many others.
