Lot Details

While many artists are known for a primary style with many sub-styles, the oeuvre of internationally acclaimed Japanese Contemporary artist Hideaki Kawashima (Japanese, b. 1969) is known almost exclusively for a consistent method and subject. "Glance" (2004) by Kawashima is one of the artist's largest and finest of his surreal paintings to-date, that seek to encapsulate the essence of what is to be feminine. Defined by a muted color palette, his otherworldly portraits seem to float through space, grounded only by luminous large, almond-shaped eyes and red painted lips. This work measures 35.80 x 28.75 inches (91 x 73 cm), is unframed and in perfect condition. The painting was acquired in 2008 by the present E.U. Private Collection directly from the prestigious Tomio Koyama Gallery, Tokyo whom represent the artist.

Hideaki Kawashima was born in 1969 in the Aichi Prefecture in China, but currently resides in Tokyo, Japan. He studied with Yoshimoto Nara and was influenced by other artists who depict such ethereal visions popular throughout Asian, Europe, and now in the US. Graduating from Tokyo Zokei University in 1991, he was also trained in classical Buddhism. He is represented in Japan by Tomio Gallery, Tokyo, and Richard Heller Gallery, Santa Monica, CA and studied with fellow Japanese artist Yoshimoto Nara.
