Lot Details

Herman Leonard (American, 1923–2010) is best known for his iconic portraits of great jazz musicians. His many famous subjects included Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie, Chet Baker, and Louis Armstrong.

Leonard moved to New York City's Greenwich Village in 1949 and opened a studio on Sullivan Street. In addition to photographing and developing friendships with his idols in the New York jazz scene, he was also a well-regarded celebrity portraitist. In 1956, Leonard was hired as Marlon Brando's personal photographer for a research trip Brando took to the Far East. During his career Leonard also worked in fashion and advertising photography, and served as the photographer for the European Playboy Magazine when he moved to Paris in the late 1950s, and where he lived until 1980.
