Herman Leonard (American, 1923–2010) is best known for his iconic portraits of a train of great jazz musicians, including: Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Eckstine, Max Roach, Buddy Rich, Tony Bennett, Art Tatum, Chet Baker, Louis Armstrong, Sarah Vaughn, Nat King Cole, Lester Young, and many others. In the late 1980s, Leonard moved to New Orleans to experience the music scene of the city that gave birth to jazz . In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina destroyed his home and studio. Though his negatives were rescued, virtually all his prints and other personal property were lost. He then relocated to Studio City, California.
