Shelter Sketchbook is a compilation of works Moore created after the saw civilians he saw seeking shelter from bombs in the Underground train stations during the London Blitz of the early 1940s. As an act of respect to the individuals, Moore did not draw from life, and instead wrote notes about what he observed as he wrote the train: “Remember figures seen last Wednesday night (Piccadilly Tube)." 'Two sleeping figures (seen from above) sharing cream-coloured thin blankets (drapery closely stuck to form). Hands and arms. Try positions oneself."
