A Scene From Pina Bausch's Ballet, Die Keuschheitslegende (The Legend of Virginity), Wuppertal, 1983. This work was part of the Year of Tibet Portfolio, a group of 24 platinum palladium prints by several important photographers, assembled by Richard Gere and Bill Borden for the Gere Foundation.

Born in 1920 in Berlin, Germany, Helmet Newton has gained notoriety for taking risks as both a fashion and an art photographer. By the 1970s, Newton was featured in American Vogue, Elle, Marie-Claire, Playboy, Nova, Queen, and Stern. Newton’s work moves beyond traditional fashion photography by introducing an element of social criticism, which is subliminal and nearly hidden, into the alluring world he photographs. Taken inside his own apartment, the atmosphere in this work conceals the critical undercurrent of the beautiful and intense mannequin depicted. This spirited nude, wearing nothing more than stiletto heels, is among Newton’s most iconic and emotionally challenging shots. The work is simultaneously sophisticated and sensuous, decadent and pornographic, mysterious, and psychologically charged.
