Lot Details

This silkscreen print in colors is by famous American artist Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011) created for the Cleveland Orchestra's 60th Anniversary Season in 1978-79. This print is a beautiful example of how Frankenthaler merged gestural abstraction with the color field approach to create a body of work that is unique and undefinable, making her one of the most significant American artists of her time. This print is AP 14/25 from a formal edition of 150 + 25 AP, measures 22.50 x 30 inches (57.10 x 76.20 cm) and is loose as issued, in excellent condition.

Helen Frankenthaler was an American artist who studied with Hans Hofmann in the 1950s, exhibiting soon after with the New York School Abstract Expressionist painters at the historic “9th St” Show. A distinctive member of the New York School, she is best known for pouring transparent layers of paint directly onto unstretched canvases. Like other Color Field painters, her method of post-painterly abstraction eliminated both the emotional expression and the gestural application of the Abstract Expressionist painters with veils and pools of poured pigment. Her contributions to the art world are still inspiring artists today. Select Public Collections:
