Lot Details

"Flotilla" with its gorgeous greens and blues, exemplifies the abstract compositions that typify Frankenthaler's best work. The bravura printing requiring 73 different colors (and runs through the press) was done by Robert Blanton, of Brand X, Andy Warhol's former printer and the only screenprinter that Frankenthaler, who is known to be very exacting, will work with.
Helen Frankenthaler, (1928-2011) was an American artist who studied with Hans Hofmann in the 1950s, exhibiting soon after with the New York School Abstract Expressionist painters at the historic “9th St” Show. A distinctive member of the New York School, she is best known for pouring transparent layers of paint directly onto unstretched canvases. Like other Color Field painters, her method of post-painterly abstraction eliminated both the emotional expression and the gestural application of the Abstract Expressionist painters with veils and pools of poured pigment.
