Lot Details

Beautifully gestural work, with jewel-like layers of color on TLG handmade paper from one of the most important members of the New York School. This piece is in excellent condition and has been framed in a contemporary frame.

Helen Frankenthaler, (1928-2011) was an American artist who studied early with Hans Hofmann in 1950's, and exhibited the following year with the New York School Abstract Expressionist painters at the historic “9th St” Show. As distinctive member of the New York School, she is best known for pouring transparent layers of paint directly onto unstretched canvas. Like other Color Field painters, her method of post-painterly abstraction eliminated both the emotional expression and the gestural application of the AbEx painters with veils and pools of poured pigment.
