Lot Details

"Landscape No. 1" (2011) is stunning large-scale realist oil painting by famed Chinese Contemporary female artist He Hongbei (China, b. 1969). The artist is most widely known for her surrealist figurative paintings and thus the paintings from her new "Landscape" series begun in 2011-2012 are rare and represent an exciting new departure for He. This painting is the very first in her "Landscape" series, and is simply a masterpiece by the artist. Sitting at river's edge is an anthropomorphic gray Scholar's Rock surrounded by lush, colorful flowers in full bloom. The revered Rock with its gently curving silhouette and smooth surfaces, as well as the overtly feminine flowers clearly replace the female figure, which the artist typically depicts in such contexts. The dialectic between the realist, black and white riverscape in the distance and lush, up-close polychrome Rock and flowers serves to heighten the surrealism and fantasy of this scene that could easily be mistaken for a photograph. "Landscape No. 1" measures 70.85 x 53.15 inches (180 x 135 cm) is unframed in excellent condition. This work can be shipped on stretchers or shipped professionally rolled as winning bidder desires.
