Lot Details

As part of her multimedia installation series 'Total Recall', which confronted viewers with a barrage of rock music set to intense imagery, this piece entitled 'Creatures' by Gretchen Bender is comprised of brushed steel, a piece of film with the title across it, and a small fluorescent bulb. With this work, Bender transforms elements of a media-saturated world into visually engaging art which is at once absorbing and intellectually inquisitive.

Known for her visually seductive and thought provoking art, contemporary artist and filmmaker Gretchen Bender (1951-2004) critiqued mainstream media with her multimedia works that manipulated ideas of propaganda and created psychological interactions with the viewer. By subverting cultural content, Bender described her approach as being "given material that that is violent, racist, and sexist, I try to make it a little less violent, less racist, and less sexist." Bender has exhibited at numerous venues including Metro Pictures (New York, NY), Marianne Boesky Gallery (New York, NY), Nature Morte Gallery (New York, NY), and The Kitchen (New York, NY), among numerous others.
