Gregory Crewdson (born 1962) is a highly acclaimed American photographer who is best known for elaborately staged, surreal scenes of American homes and neighborhoods.

This photograph, from his Natural Wonder series, is of a detailed tabletop diorama created in the then dining room studio of his Brooklyn apartment. This work was included in Peter Galassi's seminal 1991 Museum of Modern Art exhibition "Pleasures and Terrors in Domestic Comfort", which introduced Crewdson's work to an international audience and established him early on as an influential set-up photographer.

Crewdson works within a photographic tradition that combines the documentary style of William Eggleston and Walker Evans with the dream-like vision of filmmakers such as Stephen Spielberg and David Lynch. Crewdson’s method is equally filmic, building elaborate stage sets to make and take pictures of extraordinary intrigue and narrative portent.
