Lot Details

This wonderful work of Giuseppe Gallo is characteristic of the artist’s work from the late 80s. His signature use of a rich, red oil pigment, associated with the walls of Pompeii is very prominent throughout the composition. The beautiful and delicately rendered figure balanced on top of the organic form in the center brings to mind allegorical or symbolic connotations often seen in his art. The oil and watercolor smudges spread and drip from the central form as if it was cut from some living thing. The work is beautifully framed and it is in excellent condition.

Working in a variety of mediums including painting, sculpting, drafting, and even poetry, Italian Giuseppe Gallo (b. 1954) is an incredibly diversified artist who blends abstraction and representational elements into his evocative compositions, drawing inspiration from mythology and historical contexts. Though he began his career in conceptual art, Gallo soon became interested in reviving traditional painting, incorporating influences of classical and renaissance references into his art. His later work soon employed symbolic and allegorical overtones, becoming increasingly more abstract as Gallo focused on the aesthetic potential found within each of his works. Gallo has exhibited at numerous galleries internationally including Galerie Di Meo (Paris, France), Galleria dello Scudo (Verona, Italy), P.S.1 (New York, NY), and Akira Ikeda Gallery (Tokyo, Japan), among others.
