Lot Details

"Shida Yamaji" is one of the most lyrical of the decades long series of vibrant, Pop figurative paintings by famous Contemporary African artist George Lilanga that are hard to miss, moving beyond traditional roots to become lively snapshots of contemporary African life, presenting the people of Lilanga's native Tanzania through brilliant, visually rhythmic narratives filled with happy figures who play, relax and romance to the "Mapico Dance", the traditional dance and music of his homeland. In 1978, over 100 paintings by Lilanga were exhibited in Washington, D.C., and were viewed and admired by notable American Pop artists, including Keith Haring, whose artistic style bears admitted influence from Lilanga's celebratory oeuvre.
