Lot Details

"Red Recollections" (2009) is one of the most fiercely visual of the large-scale, pastiche-style paintings by internationally acclaimed Contemporary African artist, George (Kwesi Afedzi) Hughes. Unframed dimensions: 69.29 x 117.11 in (176 x 300 cm) and can be shipped professionally rolled off of stretchers. Excellent condition. Hughes' work such as this painting explores the connection between colonialism's turbulent past in his native Ghana, which gained it's independence from Britain in 1957, and contemporary global conflict. "Red Recollections" addresses the ubiquity of violence – in societies, in ecologies and in man as part of nature. His paintings are thematically dominated by visual reminders of the savage side of man and human societies, such as the decapitated soldier here, and his narratives break with the expected ways of seeing things by presenting seemingly unrelated objects together. By juxtaposing text and objects of peace with objects of violence such as guns, bullets, tanks, Hughes explores the perishability of nature, as well as that of man and morality.
