Lot Details

From The Last Photos of Marilyn Monroe, 1962. Taken on Santa Monica Beach, California before her death August, 1962. From an edition of 99.

George Barris grew up in New York City and had a lifelong interest in photography. During World War II, he worked for the U.S. Army's Office of Public Relations., and published many photographs of General Eisenhower. After the war, he became a freelance photographer and moved to Hollywood, where he photographed many stars of the 1950's and 1960's, including Elizabeth Taylor on the set of Cleopatra. He is perhaps best known for his work with Marilyn Monroe, however, with whom he was collaborating on a book at the time of her death, and it is believed that these are the last photographs taken of Monroe while she was alive. "The Last Photos" is this historic collection of Marilyn Monroe's last photo shoot, taken in 1962. The photo shoot took place over several weeks at a private home in the North Hollywood Hills, and at Santa Monica beach, California. The photos were taken in natural settings with natural lighting in order to capture the real Marilyn, not the Hollywood image. Marilyn is seen in these exquisite photographs laying on the sand and walking along the beach.
Barris did not allow these images to be published until many years after her death.
