Lot Details

This spontaneous, volatile composition is characteristic of Georg Baselitz's neo-expressionist style. 'Grunes Tuch' combines elements from two different periods in the artist's career: the fractured green bucolic scenes of the sixties, and the upside down figures of the seventies. The print was originally created as an original lithograph in color, as part of the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Carnegie Hall Portfolio.

From the beginning of his career, Georg Baselitz (b.1938) created work that is marked by an instinctual, almost subconscious reaction to his surroundings, particularly his experience growing up in a divided Germany. He has said his career, "began with a visceral feeling - a certain defensive attitude, eruptive, vulgar". Baselitz was also heavily influenced by the mentally ill, 'Art Brut,' and African sculpture. Baselitz's works have been the subject of numerous, international solo and group exhibitions since the early 1960s, including recent solo exhibitions at Musée Cantini, Marseille, France (2011), Tennis Palace Art Museum, Helsinki (2010), and Kunsthalle Baden, Baden, Germany (2009), among others.
