Lot Details

This work comes with a Certificate of Authenticity from the Fundación Gego which is available for viewing upon request.

This exceptionally rare work titled ‘Sin Titulo – Tejedura 89/1’ is made from woven cigarette paper and embraces Gego’s love for unique materials and its interaction with visual perceptions. Made in 1989, criss-crossing bands of silver, gold cigarette foils and red paper weave together to create an intricate work which accentuates the power of line, a significant form in its own right according to the artist. A six pointed star shape is integrated with the woven paper, with a hole cut out of the center to reveal the background of the work. The reflective surface of the cigarette paper plays with the light, adding dimensionality to the surface and a sense of spontaneous experimentation to the overall composition.

Hailing from Venezuela, artist Gego (Gertrude Goldschmidt, 1912-1994) blended various movements of Modernism into her uniquely innovative paintings, drawings, and sculptures. From Kinetic art, she was influenced by ideas of motion, experimentation, and interaction with the viewer. Geometric Abstraction allowed Gego to focus on the importance of line (especially in how it created a sense of movement and stood alone as its own entity) as well as space, which she considered its own form that maintained its own influence over perceptions, elements of medium, and lighting. Categorically, her work is difficult to place, but this is what defines Gego’s career, never wanting to fit into a pre-arranged mould or follow the artistic trends of the time. She has exhibited at such venues as Galeria de Arte Nacional (Caracas, Venezuela), Museum of Fine Arts (Houston, TX), and The Drawing Center (New York, NY), among others.
