Lot Details

In this mature work, created two decades after the artist's series of "black" paintings, Friedel Dzubas fills the canvas with thin veils of jewel and pastel hues. With fluid and expressionistic brushwork, "Awakening" captures the gestural immediacy of Dzubas' renowned lyrical abstraction.

Berlin-born American painter Friedel Dzubas (1915-1994) studied with Paul Klee in Düsseldorf during the thirties before emigrating to the USA. During the fifties’ he shared a studio with Helen Frankenthaler, and was one of the original 61 invited artists to participate in the first NY School Annual (the "9th Street Exhibition of Paintings and Sculpture"), and also exhibited in many of the Stable Gallery NY annuals during the fifties.
