Lot Details

Demonstrating a correlation between photography and painting, Frank Thiel’s large-scale photograph transforms reality into an abstract composition that encourages and emphasizes a personal, emotional response. In ‘Stadt 12/22’, Thiel captures the weathered paint on an abandoned building in Berlin to reference the city’s turbulent history. Neglected and crumbling, the structure echoes the city's collective mood during hard times. However, Thiel perceives the decaying wall in a different light, finding beauty, inspiration, and hope in its potential for renewal. Reminiscent of plant life, the furling green paint signifies Berlin’s continued transition towards its regeneration.

This work comes framed, with dimensions measuring 54.5 x 41 inches.

Based on the city of Berlin, the large-scale photographs by German photographer Frank Thiel (b.1966) bridge the gap between documentary and expression as they showcase beauty found in the unexpected. Capturing the city’s urban landscape, focusing on specific architectural elements that are in the process of either decay or construction, Thiel provides a photographic record of a city in the midst of change. Born in Kleinmachnow, Germany, Thiel moved to West-Berlin in 1985 to attend a training college for photography. His monumental photographs have made him one of Germany’s most important contemporary artists and have earned him such honors as the 1990 German Kodak Award and two grants from the Berlin Senate for Cultural Affairs (1995 & 1996). His work has recently been exhibited in solo shows at Galeria Leme, São Paulo, Brazil (2010); Sean Kelly Gallery, New York, NY (2009); Galeria Helga de Alvear, Madrid, Spain (2009); Galerie Krinzinger, Vienna, Austria (2006); and the National Art Museum, Kiev, Ukraine (2005).
