Lot Details

"Furg" (named after an Iranian Citadel) is related to Frank Stella's Iranian series paintings of 1965, and is one of seven prints created in 1975 for the Merce Cunningham Portfolio, which included the work of John Cage, Jasper Johns, Robert Morris, Bruce Nauman, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella and Andy Warhol. This benefit portfolio for the Merce Cuningham Dance Company commemorated former collaborations of these artists with Cunningham. (In 1967, Frank Stella had designed the set and custumes for the Cunningham dance, "Scramble".) Merce Cunningham was one of the most important and influential choreographers of the past century who, in 1953, formed his own ensemble that performed for more than five decades, and only recently concluded its final farewell tour, following the 2009 death of its founder.

This screenprint and offset litograph was made in 11 runs from 6 screens and 5 plates.

It is sold framed and measures 18 inches (horizontal) by 23 inches (vertical). The sheet itself measures 17 inches by 22 inches.
