This lithograph was published in 1975 on the occasion of Bacon’s first major show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which was also the first exhibition of a contemporary British artist’s work at the institution. The image was used on posters for the show and comes from a study for the central panel of Bacon’s famed “Triptych 1974-1977.” The trio of paintings was the last in a series of works that responded to his lover George Dyer’s tragic suicide in 1971 on the eve of his first retrospective in Paris. This image includes many of Bacon’s trademarks: twisted human figures offset by a stark, minimal background. Dyer enters the black void in the center of the image, while a bespectacled, distorted form reclines in the forefront. Two men in suits, one mustachioed and another with black, runny eyes, watch the tortured scene. The circular shape of the room references the arenas of Bacon’s earlier bullfight series.

This impression is hand signed and numbered by the artist and comes framed as shown. The signature has faded slightly, as is common with Bacon's prints.
