Born in Mexico City in 1957, Garduño studied visual art at the Antigua Academia de San Carlos in the mid 1970s. In 1979 she gave up studying to work as a darkroom assistant to Manuel Alvarez Bravo, one of the most prestigious Mexican photographers. She worked at the Secretary of Public Education under photographer Mariana Yampolsky. This opportunity allowed Garduño to explore her country and the lives of indigenous people as well. Garduño has since published numerous books and held exhibits all over the world including: Paris, Portugal, Canada, U.S., Mexico and Spain.
