French artist Fernand Léger (1881-1955) is unquestionably one of the major artists of the 20th Century. As a young man, Léger began to focus on expressing the beauty of common objects, especially those mechanical in nature. Trained as an architect and draftsman, he had a deep love of form and geometry, a marriage of aesthetics that run like a thread through his work. Often times combining classical forms and a modern structural framework, Léger began painting objects in their simplest terms and using bold, bright colors. All this with the intent of creating art that was accessible. L'Enfant à l'accordéon is an excellent example of this.

Léger once said "the object in modern painting must become the main character and overthrow the subject." By having authorship of and following the idiom to allow the "object" represented in a composition to replace the subject, Léger is recognized as being amongst the earliest progenitors of Pop art.
