Lot Details

"Chinese Portrait No. 7" (2008) belongs to the important "Chinese Portrait Series Nos. 1-10 from 2005" print portfolio of color silk-screen prints by one of the most famous Chinese Contemporary artists working today Feng Zengjie. This print has never been framed and is in original, excellent condition, loose as issued, from edition of 68. This is the first time an edition of this print has ever come to international auction.

"Chinese Portrait No 7" depicts a beautiful young woman beneath a plum tree, the green fruit framing her porcelain skin and broad smile and is based on one of the ten famous large-scale oil paintings that Feng exhibited in 2005. All of Feng's women in this "Chinese Portrait Series" are inspired by Western fashion magazines and advertisements that feature uber-thin 'otherworldly' supermodels. His own version of these women are also idealised, young and beautiful, but their luminous faces possess a dreamy, far-away look in their wandering eyes and too-perfect smiles, painted in a searing neon green and pink palette. The beauty of Feng's women is blatantly artificial, possessing a clear break from reality, vehicles that allow the artist to question the global obsession with superficial beauty and rampant consumerism based on a desire for physical perfection that is never truly attainable.

The artist was born in Sichuan, China in 1968. His portrait paintings and screen prints are some of the most sought after Contemporary Chinese artworks on both the primary and secondary market. Feng's paintings were the subject of an important solo Museum show in 2008: "Primary Colours", Singapore Art Museum and in 2005 the seminal traveling exhibition "Paintings of Feng Zhengjie" launched his career onto the international art scene, being exhibited at Goethe Art Center, Taiwan; Galerie De Bellecour, Lyons, France and Marella Art Contemporary, Milan, Italy. The artist lives and works in Beijing, China.
