Executed in 1978, this bronze tabletop sculpture by Felipe Castañeda depicts a seated woman, her face resting against her hand in a pensive attitude. From the subject's finely modeled expression to the draping lines of her clothing, the work evinces the subtlety and grace that characterize Castañeda's best-known sculptures.

Artwork is in very good condition. Please see condition report for details about the wooden base on which the artwork sits.

Felipe Castañeda (Mexican, b. 1933) is a contemporary Mexican sculptor best known for his bronze, marble, and onyx figurations of female nudes. After attending La Esmeralda Painting and Sculpture Academy in Mexico City, Castañeda became an assistant to the acclaimed sculptor Francisco Zuñiga (Mexican, 1912-1998). Castañeda’s work has been influenced both by classical European sculpture and by pre-Columbian artifacts, with which he became familiar while working for Mexico City’s National Museum of Anthropology. He has exhibited internationally and has been commissioned to create public sculptures for several cities in Mexico as well as Palm Springs, CA. His work is represented in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA and the Museum of Art History, Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. He lives and works in Morelia, Mexico.
