Lot Details

Pale green skull 4 1/2 inches high, 6 inches long approx.
Dark green skull 4 inches by 4 1/2 long

Two rare carved glass skulls by Erwin Burger each a different shade of green.
The dark green skull is the more abstract interpretation, it is signed with Burger's monogram and the date 1946, the other light green more realistic skull is unmarked.

The German artist Erwin Burger worked in Milan originally as an employee of
Fontana Arte. He carved and acid treated his innovative sculptures from chunks of glass he acquired in Murano. After World War 2 he opened his own studio. These two pieces are amongst the earliest known pieces Burger created after he set up his own studio.
Both are in good original condition with a few tiny flea bites. The largest is on the chin of the light green skull.
Please see the Steinberg Foundation catalogue for other examples of Burger's work
